Konstantin Korotkov

From Archania

Konstantin G. Korotkov (b. 1952) is a Russian physicist, inventor, and researcher best known for developing the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) technique, which is often referred to as electrophotonic imaging. His work explores the interface of physics, biology, and consciousness studies, with particular attention to the measurement of human bioenergetic fields. Korotkov is a professor of physics at Saint Petersburg Federal University of Informational Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO).

Background

Korotkov holds a PhD in physics and has published numerous scientific papers and books. He has worked on research at the intersection of biophysics, consciousness, and energy medicine. His most well-known invention, GDV, builds upon earlier Kirlian photography research, aiming to measure subtle energy fields surrounding living organisms.

Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV)

The GDV technique involves placing a fingertip on a glass electrode connected to a high-voltage power source. The resulting gas discharge glow is captured via digital camera and processed through software to generate an image that, according to Korotkov, reflects the individual’s energetic state.

The technology has been applied to:

  • Assess stress and energy levels
  • Monitor health and disease progression
  • Investigate spiritual and meditative states
  • Study water structure and other material effects

Korotkov claims the method provides a non-invasive, real-time indicator of physiological and psychological well-being.

Controversies and Criticism

Korotkov's work has been met with skepticism from parts of the scientific community. Critics argue that his interpretation of GDV data lacks rigorous validation, and that the images may be influenced by factors such as skin conductivity, moisture, or pressure rather than an “aura” or subtle energy field.

Nevertheless, the GDV technique has gained popularity in alternative medicine, complementary health practices, and some parapsychological research circles.

Publications

Korotkov has authored several books and articles, including:

  • The Energy of Health
  • Light After Life: Experiments and Ideas on After-Death Changes of Kirlian Pictures
  • Measuring Energy Fields: State of the Science
  • Science, Consciousness and Spirit

These works combine physical science, Eastern metaphysical concepts, and anecdotal case studies, often linking human consciousness to energetic phenomena.

Korotkov has appeared in documentaries and interviews, often associated with consciousness research, life after death, and integrative medicine. He is sometimes featured in discussions alongside figures like Rupert Sheldrake, Dean Radin, and Ervin László, who explore science beyond the materialist paradigm.

Legacy

While controversial, Korotkov has contributed to the ongoing discourse on how science can approach subjective experience, consciousness, and subtle energies. His instruments continue to be used in research labs, holistic clinics, and spiritual centers around the world.
